Salam Hussain is an Adjunct Associate Professor and Adjunct Senior Clinical Lecturer at the University of Western Australia (UWA), affiliated with the UWA Medical School and the School of Psychiatry & Clinical Neurosciences. He holds clinical roles as a Consultant Psychiatrist at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital (SCGH), focusing on Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry, Emergency Psychiatry, and Neuromodulation. He chairs the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists' Binational Committee for Electroconvulsive Therapy and Neurostimulation.
His research interests center on neuromodulation techniques (ECT, rTMS, tDCS), treatment-resistant mood disorders, psychosis, and psychopharmacology. Current projects include electrode placement comparisons in ECT using PET scans and transitioning patients from ECT to tDCS. He also leads audits of mental health presentations in emergency departments.
Teaching activities include training emergency physicians, GPs, and psychiatry trainees across Western Australia, alongside supervising students from UWA, University of Notre Dame Australia, and international electives. He contributes to professional practice guidelines for ketamine and transcranial magnetic stimulation in psychiatric care.
Proficient in English, Arabic, and Persian, his work aligns with UN Sustainable Development Goals related to mental health and neurological disorder management.
