Saija Hollmen is a Professor of Practice and University Lecturer in the Department of Architecture at Aalto University, affiliated with the School of Arts, Design and Architecture. She holds a Doctor of Science in Architecture (2020, Aalto University) and a Master's degree in Architecture (1999, Helsinki University of Arts and Design). Her work aligns with UN Sustainable Development Goals, particularly focusing on sustainable urban development, cultural design, and global challenges.
Research interests include architecture, sustainable development, urban planning, and cultural studies. Notable projects include the Kumasi Trees initiative addressing Sub-Saharan urban greenery and the 100 Women Architects exhibition promoting gender equity in design. She leads the EU-funded REDI project on doctoral innovation and the SUMEA initiative on sustainable building materials in Africa.
Hollmen has received awards such as the Architecture of Necessity Award (2022), Barbara Cappochin Prize (2017), and the Bauwelt Prize (2003). She actively engages in global academic activities, including invited talks on sustainability transitions and chairs conferences like Arkkitehtipäivät. Media highlights include features in international outlets discussing her contributions to global south urban planning and women in architecture.
