Saiba Varma is Associate Professor of Psychological/Medical Anthropology and Vice Chair of Undergraduate Studies at UC San Diego. She researches violence, medicine, and politics in conflict zones, with ethnographic focus on Indian-administered Kashmir.
Her work examines psychiatric and humanitarian spaces as microcosms of broader military occupation, analyzing care practices under chronic conflict conditions. Current projects investigate embodied resistance, trauma narratives, and decolonial healing practices.
Dr. Varma teaches courses on global health, medical anthropology, and conflict through feminist, anti-racist, and decolonial frameworks. She serves as Associate Director for South Asian Studies and affiliates with Critical Gender Studies, Ethnic Studies, and Global Health programs.
