Dr. Carignani's research centers on migration policy with emphasis on integration frameworks, temporary migration systems, and gendered spatial mobility. She investigates highly skilled migration patterns (particularly Italian emigration), EU asylum governance, and the socio-cultural dimensions of migrant integration. Her methodological approach combines qualitative analysis of policy documents with in-depth interviews, often focusing on Turkey-EU migration corridors and Erasmus program impacts.
Analysis of her 2020-2024 publications reveals consistent focus on EU migration exclusion mechanisms, temporariness as policy tool, and gendered mobility constraints. Key thematic clusters include: (1) critical appraisal of EU return/readmission policies; (2) intersection of gender, work, and spatial mobility; (3) Erasmus program's role in fostering long-term international careers; and (4) refugee access to European higher education. Her work bridges political science, sociology, and gender studies through multi-country comparative frameworks.
Her major recognition includes:
- Marie Curie Fellowship for INSKILLS project implementation
Dr. Carignani has secured competitive funding through Horizon 2020 (MOVE project at University of Luxembourg) and Marie Curie schemes. Her grant portfolio spans migration policy evaluation (IOM Ankara), highly skilled mobility tracking (University of Pisa), and refugee education access research. She actively collaborates with transnational research networks across 12 European institutions.
She leads the INSKILLS project team at BI Norwegian Business School while contributing to systematic review consortia on refugee education. Her collaborative networks include the MOVE project consortium (7 EU countries) and multi-institutional teams for EU migration governance studies, frequently partnering with scholars from Italy, Germany, and the Netherlands.
