Saffron Passam serves as a Lecturer in Psychology at Aberystwyth University's Department of Psychology within the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, specializing in social/occupational psychology with responsibility for placement coordination, study abroad programs, and year-in-industry initiatives. She holds a 1st Class Honours BSc in Psychology and a PhD from Aberystwyth University focused on student engagement with employability practices.
Her educational background includes a Doctor of Philosophy from Aberystwyth University with the thesis titled 'The role of learning and identity in students' engagement with employability practices in higher education: A mixed methods approach', alongside a Post-Graduate Certificate in Teaching in Higher Education (PGCTHE).
Passam's research critically examines intersectional dynamics of gender, race, disability, and class within organizational systems. Her work challenges meritocratic assumptions and exposes inequitable practices in institutions committed to equality, particularly through investigations of unconscious bias training in scientific fields and barriers faced by women from lower socioeconomic backgrounds in Civil Service careers. As an active member of Aberystwyth's Center for Critical Psychology, she advocates for structural inclusion in academia and professional environments.
Her recent publications reveal a concentrated focus on deconstructing unconscious bias training mechanisms in scientific communities (2023) and expanding career pathways for psychology students beyond traditional professional roles (2022), demonstrating consistent thematic alignment with systemic inequality and workforce integration.
- Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA)
- Post-Graduate Certificate in Teaching in Higher Education (PGCTHE)
- Home Office Gender Equality Network funding recipient (2016)
Passam supervises three doctoral students while leading significant research projects including EPSRC-funded investigations into inclusion in physical science and engineering research (2018-2021), and previously directed a Home Office study examining socioeconomic barriers for women in Civil Service careers. Her teaching portfolio includes coordinating Organizational Behavior (PS11710) and placement modules, alongside contributing to Psychology and Criminology programs with integrated industry years.
As a core member of Aberystwyth's Center for Critical Psychology, she participates in multi-disciplinary initiatives challenging systemic bias through the EPSRC's 'Challenging different forms of bias in physical science and engineering research' project across both Psychology and Computer Science divisions.
