Sadia Nafees is a Research Fellow at Bangor University's School of Health Sciences, serving as Research Officer at the Centre for Mental Health and Society since 2018. With a clinical dentistry background, she transitioned to healthcare research, holding prior roles at North Wales Centre for Primary Care Research and Cardiff University.
Her PhD in Healthcare Sciences (2016) focused on physical activity interventions for cancer survivors. She teaches medical students about social determinants of health and mentors Master's students in research methodologies.
Dr. Nafees' research spans mental health services innovation, opioid prescribing, prison healthcare, and social determinants of health. She employs systematic reviews and qualitative methods to address gaps in primary care systems, particularly in low-resource settings and criminal justice environments. Her work emphasizes patient engagement and translational impact.
Recent publications (2021-2025) reveal intensified focus on global mental health and prison-based interventions, with systematic reviews dominating her methodology. Key trends include cross-cultural analysis of self-harm in LMICs, opioid management frameworks, and cancer detection pathways in primary care.
She supervises seven students across undergraduate to PhD levels, including John Bailey (opioid effects) and Jakub Matusiak (breast reconstruction). Her £717k grant portfolio features Principal Investigator roles on INSIGHT (£105k) and PACS (£17k), plus Co-Investigator work on SMILE (£250k) and substance misuse evaluations (£325k).
As a core Centre for Mental Health and Society member, she leads international collaborations with UK, Pakistan, and India partners through interdisciplinary teams focused on healthcare system innovation.
