Sada J. Reed is an Associate Professor at the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Arizona State University (ASU) and a 2024-25 U.S. Fulbright Scholar in Aarhus, Denmark. She holds a Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where her dissertation examined sports journalists’ interactions with whistleblowers. Her research focuses on sports journalism practices, including doping coverage, role conflict, hero mythology, and the impact of social media. She teaches courses on ethics, diversity, and advanced sports media topics.
Education: Ph.D. in Mass Communication (UNC Chapel Hill, 2015), M.A. and B.A. in Journalism (University of Minnesota, 2011 and 2003). Former journalist roles include positions at the Beaufort Gazette, Jacksonville Journal-Courier, and Kennebec Journal.
Research Interests: Her work explores how journalists balance professionalism with fandom, the framing of athlete doping scandals, and the evolution of sports reporting. She has published widely in journals like Journal of Sports Media and Communication & Sport.
Awards: 2018 Kopenhaver Center Fellow and 2013 AEJMC Sports Communication Award Winner. Her recent Fulbright fellowship supports research on Danish sports journalism practices. She advises students in ethics-based projects and has developed curricula on global sports governance and athlete activism.
