Her research focuses on autoimmune thyroid diseases, particularly exploring genetic and environmental factors influencing conditions like Graves' Disease and Hashimoto's Thyroiditis. Her work also examines selenium metabolism, stress-related immune responses, and dietary interventions' effects on biochemical parameters.
She leads a 2024-2028 project investigating diet-microbiome interactions in thyroid autoimmune diseases and collaborates on projects examining environmental-genetic interactions in immunological mechanisms of thyroid disorders. Key collaborations include work with Prof. Konrāde and others at Latvian institutions.
Her recent publications analyze selenium's role in autoimmune processes, dietary impacts on metabolic markers, and clinical aspects of endocrine disorders. She actively presents findings at conferences, focusing on genetic loci, biomarkers, and clinical applications.
Upmale-Engela's research aligns with UN Sustainable Development Goals addressing health and well-being, contributing to understanding chronic disease mechanisms and potential interventions.
