Sabrina Madison-Cannon

Sabrina Madison-Cannon serves as the Phyllis and Andrew Berwick Dean and Professor of Dance in the School of Music and Dance at the University of Oregon. A former soloist with the Philadelphia Dance Company (Philadanco), she has performed works by renowned choreographers including Talley Beatty and Milton Meyers, and holds a Master of Fine Arts in Dance from the University of Iowa.

Dr. Madison-Cannon's research spans Dance Administration, Choreography, and Dance History with focused expertise in African-American Dance traditions. Her work examines cultural lineages in dance, particularly the enduring impact of Lester Horton on African-American dance ethos and contemporary choreographic practices.

Her scholarly output combines historical analysis with creative practice, exemplified by her 2004 conference paper on Horton and internationally presented choreographic works. These demonstrate consistent engagement with dance as both academic discipline and embodied cultural expression across global contexts.

Her honors include:

With extensive teaching appointments at Southern Methodist University, University of North Texas, and Philadelphia School of Dance Arts, she has mentored generations of dancers. Her 2014 China collaboration with UMKC’s Wind Symphony Players exemplifies her leadership in cross-disciplinary, internationally funded artistic projects.

She maintains active creative partnerships with major dance institutions including Philadanco and has presented choreography at premier international festivals from Barcelona to Bari, advancing global dialogue in contemporary dance practice.
