Sabir Hemmen

Sabir Hemmen serves as Professor and Group Leader at the German Center for Neurodegenerative Diseases (DZNE) in Bonn, concurrently holding dual clinical-academic appointments as Head of Experimental Neonatology and Senior Physician within the Department of Neonatology and Pediatric Intensive Care Medicine at University Hospital Bonn, part of the University of Bonn's Faculty of Medicine.

His research program centers on dissecting mechanisms of inflammation-sensitized experimental hypoxic-ischemic brain injury with and without therapeutic hypothermia, with particular emphasis on microglial cell dynamics across perinatal injury models including hypoxia-ischemia, inflammation, and prematurity. His laboratory employs multimodal approaches spanning behavioral phenotyping, cell-specific profiling, and long-term neurofunctional outcome assessments to pioneer clinically translatable biomarkers and neuroprotective strategies for vulnerable newborn populations.

Dr. Hemmen directs the Experimental Neonatology research group at Venusberg Campus, driving translational initiatives focused on improving neurodevelopmental outcomes through mechanistic insights into perinatal brain pathophysiology and therapeutic intervention development.
