Else Marit Løberg is a Professor in the Department of Pathology at the University of Oslo's Faculty of Medicine. Her research spans multiple disciplines within medical pathology with a particular focus on neonatal brain injury and therapeutic interventions. She maintains her primary affiliation with Oslo University Hospital (OUS HF Rikshospitalet) where her laboratory work is conducted.
Dr. Løberg's research interests center on neonatal hypoxia-ischemia, therapeutic hypothermia, and neuroprotection mechanisms. Her work extensively utilizes animal models, particularly piglets and rats, to investigate brain injury following oxygen deprivation. She has made significant contributions to understanding how temperature regulation affects neurological outcomes, the role of various compounds in neuroprotection, and the pathophysiological mechanisms of hypoxic-ischemic brain damage. Her research also extends to gastrointestinal pathology, liver fibrosis, and inflammatory responses in various organ systems.
Analysis of her recent publications reveals a consistent focus on translational research bridging basic science and clinical applications. Her work demonstrates particular expertise in developing and refining animal models of neonatal brain injury, investigating sex differences in treatment responses, and exploring novel therapeutic approaches including cannabidiol, N-acetylcysteine amide, and DHA supplementation. The interdisciplinary nature of her research connects neuroscience, physiology, immunology, and molecular biology.
Throughout her career, Dr. Løberg has maintained extensive collaborations with leading researchers in neonatal medicine, particularly with Ola Didrik Saugstad and Marianne Thoresen. Her work has contributed significantly to the understanding of hypothermia as a neuroprotective strategy for newborns suffering from hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy. She has supervised numerous research projects and contributed to the development of experimental methodologies in her field.
