Sabine Mecking is a full Professor of History at Philipps-Universität Marburg, Department of Hessian State History. She specializes in modern and contemporary history with a focus on democracy, National Socialism, police history, urban studies, and cultural history. Her academic career includes roles at Hochschule für Polizei und öffentliche Verwaltung NRW (2012-2018) and a Habilitation at Heinrich-Heine-Universität Düsseldorf (2008-2009). She has held visiting fellowships globally, including at the Deutsches Historisches Institut in Paris and Washington D.C., and chairs/co-edits multiple journals like Archiv für Polizeigeschichte and Modene Stadtgeschichte.
Her research interests span protest historiography, administrative systems under authoritarian regimes, and applied historical methodologies. Notable works include Polizei im Wandel (2019) and Bürgerwille und Gebietsreform (2012). Awards include the 2011 Wissenschafts-Förderpreis and DFG Habilitation stipend (2006-2008). She has advised numerous collaborative projects, such as the Feuerwehren im Nationalsozialismus study and the Stadtverwaltung Münster in der NS-Zeit initiative.
Her editorial contributions include the Schriftenreihe „Geschichte und Ethik der Polizei“ and co-editorship of Westfälische Forschungen. Professional memberships span institutions like the Historische Kommission für Hessen and the German Historical Association (VHHD). Current research focuses on police-state interactions in post-WWII Germany and transnational cultural transfers.
