Dr Sabine Matallana-Surget is an Associate Professor in Environmental and Molecular Microbiology at the University of Stirling's Faculty of Natural Sciences. She leads a multidisciplinary research group focused on microbial responses to environmental stresses, with expertise in proteomics, microbial ecology, and ecotoxicology. Her work integrates cutting-edge technologies like metaproteomics to study microbial communities in marine environments.
- Education:
- PhD (2005–2009): Joint Doctoral Degree (Cotutelle) between University Pierre et Marie Curie (France) and University of New South Wales (Australia)
- Master's (2005): Molecular and Cellular Biology, UPMC, Paris
- BSc (2003): Molecular and Cellular Biology, UPMC, Paris
Her research explores how marine microorganisms respond to environmental stressors such as pollution and climate change. Current projects include leading an international consortium on plastic pollution in Southeast Asia (NERC-funded), investigating microbial biofilms on microplastics using metaproteomics. She has secured grants from NERC, EPSRC, the Royal Society, and others, fostering collaborations across 6 countries.
Grants & Leadership:
- Leading NERC-funded project 'Sources, Impacts, and Solutions for Plastics in Southeast Asia Coastal Environments' (22 partners across 6 countries)
- Active in the South East Asia Plastics (SEAP) Programme
Research Themes: Environmental microbiology, biotechnology applications, and ecological impacts of anthropogenic activities.
