Sabine Bishop is a Research Fellow in the Maritime Meteorology Research Unit at GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel, where she has held continuous research positions since 2014. Currently leading RESCUE project work under the Earth System Dynamics group (N. Mengis), she previously contributed to the HI-CAM initiative and focused on atmospheric physics within S. Fiedler and K. Matthes' teams.
Her educational foundation includes a Master's in Climate Physics (2011-2014) and Bachelor's in Earth System Physics (2008-2011) from Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel, plus a Bachelor's in Environmental and Resource Management from Brandenburg University of Technology (2005-2008).
Bishop's research centers on climate system interactions, particularly stratosphere-troposphere coupling, ocean-atmosphere feedbacks, and extreme weather mechanisms. She employs Earth system modeling to investigate climate variability across time scales, with emphasis on polar regions and the role of interactive chemistry in atmospheric dynamics. Her work consistently addresses how external forcings like Antarctic ozone depletion and freshwater input alter global circulation patterns.
Recent publications reveal strong thematic continuity in polar climate dynamics, with 2023-2025 studies examining European heat wave drivers, Southern Ocean atmospheric responses to Antarctic changes, and stratospheric representation impacts on Northern Hemisphere climate. Her work bridges atmospheric chemistry, ocean physics, and extreme event analysis through advanced modeling frameworks.
As academic supervisor, Bishop guided Annabelle d'Heureuse's 2024 Bachelor thesis on Southern Hemispheric Sudden Stratospheric Warmings in the FOCI model and co-supervised Jaika Fricke's 2021 Master's research on interactive chemistry's role in climate variability. She actively contributes to GEOMAR's RESCUE project and previously engaged with the HI-CAM climate initiative.
Based in GEOMAR's Kiel facility (Wischhofstr. 1-3), she operates within the Maritime Meteorology unit's collaborative framework, utilizing institutional climate modeling resources while maintaining close ties with Kiel University's academic ecosystem.
