Sabina Groeneveld is a Lecturer in International Studies at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS), Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS). She holds a PhD from the University of Sydney (2008–2015) and a Master’s in German Studies, Education, and Psychology from Humboldt University of Berlin (1995–2001). Her research focuses on colonial history, particularly German colonialism in Qingdao (1897–1914), and explores themes like everyday life dynamics, Human-Animal Studies, and postcolonial cultural studies. She has been at UTS since 2010.
Research Interests: Dr. Groeneveld examines colonial identities through lenses like self-testimonies (letters/diaries), drinking cultures in colonial societies, and the construction of 'Heimat' (homeland) in German-occupied Qingdao. Her work bridges cultural and social history with postcolonial theory. Notable outputs include a book on Qingdao’s colonial life and analyses of German-Chinese interactions in domestic and public spheres.
