Sabina Cveček is a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Global Fellow at the Austrian Archaeological Institute (Austrian Academy of Sciences, Vienna) and the Field Museum in Chicago. She specializes in socio-cultural anthropology and interdisciplinary approaches to interpreting prehistoric social organization, particularly focusing on non-state societies in the Eastern Mediterranean. Her MSCA-funded project X-KIN examines prehistoric kinship through material culture and ethnographic parallels.
Education: PhD in Socio-cultural Anthropology (University of Vienna, 2021), MA (University of Vienna), and BA in Ethnology (University of Ljubljana, Slovenia). She has conducted fieldwork in Greece and Turkey since 2016.
Research interests include household archaeology, socio-political models, kinship practices, and exchange networks in prehistoric contexts. Key contributions include her book Çukuriçi Höyük 4 (2022) analyzing Bronze Age household economics and her work on prehistoric kinship systems.
Awards include the sowi:doc Award (2021) and Vienna's 2023 Promotion Award. She is a Fellow of the Royal Anthropological Institute and co-chair of the Archaeology and Gender in Europe (AGE) network (2023-2026).
Her research bridges anthropology and archaeology, emphasizing material codes of social organization and interdisciplinary methods. Recent publications explore Bronze Age metal production, childhood studies, and socio-political complexity in Anatolia.
