Alfred Galik is a Research Professor and senior researcher at the Austrian Archaeological Institute (ÖAI) of the Austrian Academy of Sciences (ÖAW), leading the Bioarchaeology Lab since 2024. He holds a degree in Paleontology from the University of Vienna and habilitated in Archaeozoology of Veterinary Medicine in 2016. His work bridges paleontology, veterinary science, and archaeology, focusing on bioarchaeological questions in prehistoric and historical contexts.
Key roles include coordinating the Bioarchaeology Lab and leading projects such as Lousoi/Gremoulias, Hemmaberg, and Ephesos. Research interests span archaeozoology, environmental history, and morphometry, with a focus on domestication and paleopathology.
His 60+ publications include studies on faunal remains from Ephesos, Çukuriçi Höyük, and Barcın Höyük. Notable works analyze animal husbandry, ritual practices, and dietary isotopes in Anatolian settlements. Recent projects explore fishery practices in Neolithic Ephesus and dairying revolutions in Northwest Turkey.
Galik’s work integrates interdisciplinary methods, including geometric morphometrics and multi-proxy analyses, to reconstruct past human-animal relationships and environmental interactions. He contributes to international collaborations, such as the Fish Remains Working Group (FRWG), and advises on archaeological methodologies.
