Sabia McCoy-Torres is an Associate Professor jointly appointed in the Department of Anthropology and Program in Africana Studies at Tulane University. She is on leave for 2024-25 and holds a Ph.D. in social/cultural anthropology from Cornell University. Her research examines the African Diaspora (English/Spanish-speaking contexts), race, gender/sexuality, transnationalism, and Black popular music/performance. She is currently working on a book using reggae culture to analyze West Indian Diaspora dynamics in Costa Rica and Brooklyn, New York.
Education: Ph.D. in Social and Cultural Anthropology, Cornell University.
Research Interests include:
- Black popular music and performance
- Racial and ethnic identity in Latin America
- Transnational migration
- Urban music and cultural studies
Publications include peer-reviewed articles in Popular Music & Society, Black Music Research Journal, and Transforming Anthropology (for which she serves as Contributing Editor). She also writes critically about race and representation in blogs like Remezcla and Latino Rebels.
