Saúl Sosnowski is a Professor of Spanish and Portuguese at the University of Maryland, College Park, and Affiliate Faculty at the Latin American and Caribbean Studies Center. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Virginia. His research focuses on diaspora, identity narratives, Latin American politics, and cultural democratization. He has authored over 90 articles and 17 edited volumes, including Borges y la Cábala and Exile, Diaspora, and Return (2021), which won the 2022 Arthur Whitaker Prize. He has directed major initiatives like the 'Discovering the Americas' program and co-led National Endowment for the Humanities institutes in Mexico and Brazil.
Sosnowski has held leadership roles, including Chair of the Department of Spanish and Portuguese (1979–2000), Director of the Latin American Studies Center (1989–2009), and Director of the Institute for International Programs (2000–2011). He has been a visiting scholar at institutions such as The Hebrew University of Jerusalem and the University of Melbourne. His work bridges literature, politics, and civic education, with a focus on post-authoritarian societies in the Southern Cone.
He founded and edits the literary journal Hispamérica, serves on multiple scholarly boards, and has secured funding from the Rockefeller Foundation, NEH, and others. His research and advocacy address cultural diplomacy, conflict management, and the role of diasporas in democratization processes.
