Prof. Sunmi Shin is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the National University of Singapore (NUS). She joined NUS as a Research Assistant Professor in 2018 and transitioned to Assistant Professor in 2019. Her research focuses on nanoscale heat transport, personalized thermo-regulators, and energy harvesting devices, employing a multidisciplinary approach across mechanical engineering and materials science.
Education: She earned her Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering from UC San Diego (2019) under Prof. Renkun Chen, and B.S./M.S. in Chemical Engineering from Hanyang University (2011/2014).
- Research Interests: Heat transfer, super-Planckian thermal emission, thermoelectrics, cooling systems, nanomaterials, and thermal management.
- Laboratory: Leads the HEAT Lab (High Efficient and Active Thermal-engineering), exploring energy conversion and thermal management technologies.
- Teaching: Instructs courses like ME2121 Engineering Thermal Dynamics and ME6204 Advanced Heat Transfer.
Awards: Recipient of the Global Young Investigator Award (2022), MIT Innovators Under 35 (2021), and Women-in-Science & Technology Award (2021). Her work bridges thermal engineering with sustainable energy and nanomaterial innovation.
Lab Activities: Actively recruiting M.S./Ph.D. students and postdocs for projects in thermal engineering, nanomaterials, and novel characterization techniques. Prospective students are encouraged to apply via the Department of Mechanical Engineering.
