S.R.A. Kersten

S.R.A. Kersten is a full Professor of Sustainable Process Technology at the Department of Chemical Engineering, University of Twente, The Netherlands. He also serves as Coordinator of the biomass pillar within the Green Energy Initiative (GEI) at the University of Twente and holds academic roles dating back to 1996. His research focuses on biomass conversion, catalysis, and sustainable chemical processes with applications in biofuels, waste valorization, and circular economy.

Research Interests:

Dr. Kersten's work integrates chemical engineering principles with renewable resource utilization, emphasizing pyrolysis, hydrothermal liquefaction, and catalytic processes for biomass and plastic waste conversion. He explores innovative separation techniques, such as ionic liquid-based metal extraction and reactive distillation, while addressing challenges in energy efficiency and process scalability. Collaborations with academia (e.g., WSU, UGhent, Curtin University) and industries (Shell, Akzo) drive applied research outcomes.

Teaching & Supervision:

He has supervised over 30 master students, 6 post-docs, and 18 PhD candidates since 2003. Current teaching includes Multiphase Reactors (MSc) and Reaction Engineering at the Shell Training Centre. Over 11 ongoing PhD projects are managed under his leadership.
