S. Patrick Walton is the C. Robert and Kathryn M. Weir Endowed Associate Professor in Chemical Engineering and Materials Science at Michigan State University (MSU), serving as Associate Dean for Academic Programs in the College of Engineering. He holds affiliations with Biomedical Engineering and Materials Science and Engineering programs. Walton earned a B.ChE. from Georgia Institute of Technology (1994), followed by M.S. and Sc.D. degrees in Chemical Engineering from MIT (2000 and 2002). His postdoctoral work at Stanford University focused on RNA delivery technologies.
His research spans biomolecular engineering, nucleic acid biotechnology, and engineering education. Notable contributions include RNA interference mechanisms, MOF-based drug delivery systems, and studies on student motivation in engineering education. He has secured grants from NIH and NSF for projects like exomere isolation for RNA delivery and cancer cell migration mechanisms.
Walton has received multiple teaching awards including the MSU Lilly Fellowship and College of Engineering Withrow Award. His work emphasizes interdisciplinary approaches, combining biochemical engineering with educational research to address challenges in both biomedical applications and STEM pedagogy.
