S. Marie Harvey is an OSU Distinguished Professor of Public Health and the Associate Dean for Research in the College of Health at Oregon State University. With 35 years of experience in public health research, she focuses on sexual and reproductive health, particularly the behavioral, contextual, and policy aspects of unintended pregnancy, sexual behavior, and abortion among diverse populations of young adults. Her work aims to reduce disparities in risky sexual behavior and increase access to health services for vulnerable populations.
Dr. Harvey received her doctoral degree in 1984 and MPH in 1979 from the School of Public Health at the University of California, Los Angeles. She joined the Oregon State University faculty in 2003, bringing extensive expertise in public health research methodology and practice.
Dr. Harvey's research has evolved from examining risk and prevention of unintended pregnancy and STIs among high-risk populations to investigating the impact of healthcare system changes on reproductive outcomes. Her current work examines how Medicaid expansion under the Affordable Care Act affects abortion services access in Oregon. She has published extensively on relationship dynamics influencing contraceptive decisions, health disparities among Latino communities, and policy impacts on women's reproductive health.
Analysis of Dr. Harvey's publications reveals a consistent interdisciplinary approach spanning public health, epidemiology, behavioral science, and health policy. Her work demonstrates particular expertise in community-based research with diverse populations, especially rural Latino communities in Oregon, and has significantly contributed to understanding how relationship factors, discrimination, and healthcare system changes affect sexual and reproductive health outcomes.
Dr. Harvey has received significant recognition for her contributions:
- 2008 Award for Lifetime Achievement in Population, Family Planning, and Reproductive Health from the American Public Health Association
- 2017 Lifetime Achievement Award from the Oregon Public Health Association
As an active researcher and mentor, Dr. Harvey currently serves as Principal Investigator on multiple significant projects, including a Society of Family Planning-funded study examining Medicaid expansion's impact on abortion services. She previously led a six-year CDC-funded project evaluating Coordinated Care Organizations and Medicaid expansion effects on women's health in Oregon. She is accepting new HMP PhD and MPH students, continuing her dedication to translating research findings into policies that improve health outcomes for women, men, and families.
Dr. Harvey maintains strong affiliations with multiple research centers at Oregon State University, including the Sexual and Reproductive Health Equity Consortium, Transforming Academia for Equity Center for Global Health, and School of Nutrition and Public Health, demonstrating her commitment to interdisciplinary collaboration in addressing complex public health challenges.
