S. Bradley Moran is Dean of the College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, where he plays a key leadership role in advancing marine and oceanographic research in the Arctic. His academic background includes a Ph.D. in Oceanography from Dalhousie University and a B.Sc. in Chemistry from Concordia University.
His research interests span oceanography, marine geochemistry, Arctic Ocean dynamics, and the development of the blue economy. He specializes in the use of geochemical tracers such as thorium isotopes to study particle scavenging, water mass circulation, and biogeochemical processes in polar oceans.
His recent publications reflect a dual focus: (1) fundamental oceanographic research in the Arctic and North Atlantic using radionuclide tracers, and (2) policy and workforce development for sustainable marine economies. This interdisciplinary approach bridges science, education, and policy.
Scientific contributions include significant peer-reviewed articles in Geophysical Research Letters, Journal of Geophysical Research: Oceans, and Marine Policy. His work often involves international collaborations and large-scale oceanographic datasets.
Moran has contributed to leadership training and operational best practices for Arctic research, particularly through his involvement with the R/V Sikuliaq. He is actively engaged in shaping the future of marine science through academic administration and strategic research planning.
