Prof. Dr. Rüdiger Bittner is a distinguished Professor of Philosophy at the University of Bielefeld, where he has been since 1991. His academic journey includes studies at the Universities of Tübingen, Berlin, Heidelberg, and Harvard, culminating in a Dr. phil. from Heidelberg (1970) and Habilitation from FU Berlin (1982). Before Bielefeld, he held positions at Princeton, Hildesheim, and Yale Universities.
His research focuses on ethics, political philosophy, action theory, and the history of philosophy, with notable contributions to Kantian ethics, Nietzschean thought, and moral autonomy. Bittner's work bridges analytical philosophy with historical traditions, examining themes like practical reason, moral obligation, and the intersection of law and morality.
Key publications include What Reason Demands (1989), Doing Things for Reasons (2001), and Good Things to Do (2023). He has collaborated internationally, hosting visiting scholars and engaging in interdisciplinary research through Bielefeld's Center for Interdisciplinary Research (ZiF).
