Róisín Nash is a Senior Lecturer in Marine Ecology at the National University of Ireland Galway (NUI Galway), based in the Department of Natural Resources & The Environment. She also serves as Principal Investigator at the Marine and Freshwater Research Centre (MFRC). Her research focuses on microplastics in marine and freshwater ecosystems, with particular emphasis on their distribution, bioaccumulation, and ecological impacts. Key areas include the plastisphere's geographic patterns, microplastic pollution in coastal and deep-sea environments, and the role of species like Nephrops norvegicus and Littorina littorea as biomonitoring tools.
Her work integrates eco-engineering solutions to enhance biodiversity and mitigate pollution, alongside studies on climate change effects and trace metal interactions. She has led collaborative projects across Europe, publishing extensively on microplastic methodology, food web contamination, and policy-driven environmental assessments. In 2021, she was awarded the Postgraduate Research Supervision Award, reflecting her excellence in mentoring students.
Nash's research spans from lab-based biochemical analyses of seaweeds to large-scale field studies in Galway Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. She advocates for standardized protocols in microplastic monitoring and emphasizes interdisciplinary approaches to address anthropogenic impacts on marine systems.
