Dr. Ryoko Sasamoto is an Associate Professor in the School of Applied Language & Intercultural Studies (SALIS) at Dublin City University (DCU), and a member of the Centre for Translation and Textual Studies (CTTS). She holds a BA, MPhil, and PhD in linguistics and translation studies. Her research focuses on Pragmatics, Audiovisual Translation, Reception Studies, and Linguistics, with a particular emphasis on the communication of emotions via onomatopoeia, emoji, reaction GIFs, and fansubbing. She employs mixed-method approaches, including eye-tracking and multimodal analysis, to explore cognitive pragmatics in media and translation.
Dr. Sasamoto supervises PhD students in areas such as onomatopoeia in translated manga, Kanji pedagogy, and fansubbing communities in Thailand/China. She has received the Career Enhancement Award from DCU (2012). Her work bridges Relevance Theory with interdisciplinary studies, examining how text-on-screen elements (e.g., telop) engage viewers in TV programs. She also explores ethical issues in translation and online research methodologies.
