Rychard Bouwens is an Associate Professor at the Leiden Observatory, part of the Faculty of Science at Leiden University. His research focuses on galaxy formation and evolution, particularly the earliest epochs of the universe and their connection to cosmic reionization. He holds a PhD from UC Berkeley and has been a Postdoctoral Fellow at UC Santa Cruz. Bouwens leads a research group using advanced telescopes like the Hubble Space Telescope, Spitzer, Keck, and VLT to study galaxy properties such as luminosity, size, star formation rates, and dark matter distribution.
Education:
- Bachelor of Science in Physics, Mathematics, and Chemistry (magna cum laude) from Hope College
- PhD in Galaxy Formation and Evolution from UC Berkeley
Research Interests: The evolution of galaxies from the universe's infancy, their morphological and kinematic properties, and their interplay with cosmic reionization. Bouwens' team employs multi-wavelength observations to trace galaxy growth, leveraging facilities like the upcoming James Webb Space Telescope.
Grants & Advising: Secured a 3.1 million NWO grant for cosmological mapping. Advises four PhD candidates: Thomas Herard, Ivana van Leeuwen, Lucie Rowland, and Sander Schouws.
Labs & Teams: Head of the Bouwens Research Group at Leiden Observatory, specializing in observational cosmology and galaxy evolution.
