Before academia, Williams practiced law as a litigation associate at Sullivan & Cromwell in New York, focusing on class actions and complex commercial litigation. He later held fellowships: the Sharswood Fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania Law School (2011–2013) and an associate-in-law position at Columbia University (2013–2016).
