Ryan Wells is a Professor in the Department of Educational Policy, Research & Administration (EPRA) at the University of Massachusetts Amherst and Director of the Center for Student Success Research. His work focuses on college access, equity, and success for marginalized student populations, particularly those affected by socioeconomic status, disability, and geographic location. He has secured funding from organizations including the National Science Foundation, Spencer Foundation, and Ford Foundation. His research appears in top journals like The Journal of Higher Education and Teachers College Record.
Wells holds a B.S. from Iowa State University (1995), an M.A. from the University of Iowa (2004), and a Ph.D. from the University of Iowa (2008). He teaches courses such as EDUC 614 (Access and Equity in Higher Education) and EDUC 676 (Secondary Data Analysis).
His research explores interdisciplinary themes including rural-nonrural enrollment disparities, disability support systems in STEM fields, and the impact of policy initiatives on transfer student success. He emphasizes practical applications of his findings to inform institutional practices and public policy.
Wells collaborates with community partners and universities to evaluate programs that broaden participation in STEM. His work bridges quantitative and qualitative methods, often employing mixed-methods approaches to address systemic inequities in higher education.
