Ryan Vander Wielen is a Professor of Political Science (and by affiliation, Economics) at Stony Brook University, where he also serves as Director of the M.A. in Public Policy program. He holds a Ph.D. and M.A. in Political Science from Washington University in St. Louis, preceded by a B.A. in Government and B.Mus. in Music Performance (classical guitar) from Lawrence University. His career includes visiting fellowships at Duke University and Sciences-Po Lyon.

Ryan’s research focuses on American political institutions, legislative strategy, and the intersection of media influence with political accountability. His work employs formal modeling and quantitative methodology to analyze how legislators navigate electoral pressures, party dynamics, and media environments. A recurring theme in his scholarship is the strategic behavior of political actors, such as the impact of Fox News on congressional decision-making and the role of party leaders as coalition builders.
His publications span top-tier journals like American Journal of Political Science, British Journal of Political Science, and Public Choice, alongside co-authored books including The American Congress (Rowman & Littlefield) and Taming Intuition (Cambridge University Press). Awards for his scholarship include the 2018 Robert E. Lane Award for best book in political psychology and the 2012 Jewell-Loewenberg Award for best article in Legislative Studies Quarterly.
Ryan teaches courses in legislative politics, statistical methods, and game theory at both undergraduate and graduate levels. His pedagogical experience includes courses at Stony Brook University, Temple University, Duke University, and Washington University in St. Louis.
