Ryan Van Meter is an Associate Senior Instructional Professor and Associate Director of the Program in Creative Writing at the University of Chicago. He also serves as the Minor and MAPH Liaison, supporting students in their academic and creative endeavors.
- Education: MFA from the University of Iowa and MA from DePaul University.
Ryan's work focuses on identity, longing and desire, family dynamics, and nostalgia, often blending personal essay and road narratives with visual art practices. His writing explores the intersections of self-acceptance, body image, male friendship, and empowerment through sustained denial of personal truths.
His creative output spans literary journals and anthologies, with themes reflecting gender and sexual identity, family history, and cultural critique. His work has appeared in The Iowa Review, Brevity, and Ninth Letter, as well as anthologies like The Best American Essays.

Ryan prioritizes process over product in teaching, emphasizing careful observation of the world, memory, and metaphorical meanings. He has developed courses on oral history, road narratives, experimental nonfiction, and flash narratives, fostering a classroom environment centered on peer discussion and free-writing practices.
