Ryan Smith Madan

Ryan Smith Madan is an Associate Professor of Teaching in the Department of Humanities & Arts at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI), affiliated with the Professional Writing, Writing & Rhetoric, and Writing Center programs. He holds a PhD from the University of Pittsburgh (2012), MA (2008), BA from UCLA (2002), and AA from Pasadena City College (2000). His research focuses on the philosophies underpinning writing instruction, particularly how educational priorities reflect cultural values and institutional goals. He critiques traditional grammar-centric approaches and advocates for reflective pedagogies that integrate narrative knowledge-making and post-colonial theory. Madan’s work emphasizes project-based learning’s role in fostering interdisciplinary skills and real-world relevance.

His scholarly contributions include studies on pandemic-era writing center adaptations, ethics in stylistic choices, and the transformative potential of student narratives in scholarship.
