Ryan P. Walter is an Associate Professor in the Biological Sciences department at California State University, Fullerton (CSUF). He holds a PhD from the University of Windsor and dual MS and BS degrees from the State University of New York at Brockport. His research focuses on molecular ecology, hybridization, phylogeography, and population connectivity, with particular attention to aquatic species.
Walter’s work spans marine and freshwater systems, investigating genetic patterns in species such as sculpins, sharks, manta rays, and grunion. He leads the CSUF Molecular Ecology Lab, emphasizing conservation implications of genetic diversity and the impact of environmental changes. His studies often integrate field data with molecular tools to address ecological and evolutionary questions.
Key contributions include identifying genetic structures in threatened species like the eastern sand darter, analyzing hybridization events in invasive species, and advancing environmental DNA (eDNA) techniques for rare species detection. He teaches courses such as Evolutionary Genetics and Genetics, and collaborates internationally on projects involving Arctic, Hawaiian, and Caribbean ecosystems.
Walter’s lab actively advocates for equity and inclusion in science, supporting marginalized communities through research and education. His research frequently addresses conservation challenges, such as mitigating human-mediated impacts on biodiversity and informing management strategies for exploited species.
