Ryan McBride is the Andrew A. N. Pritzker Director of the Tulane Debate Society and Senior Professor of Practice in the Department of English at Tulane University. He specializes in classical rhetoric and teaches the course Aristotle in New Orleans (ENLS 3650), which integrates Aristotelian ethics and Quintilian's rhetorical theories with service-learning projects coaching debate in New Orleans public schools.
His research focuses on:
- Community-engaged pedagogy through debate education
- Ethical frameworks in classical rhetoric
- Interdisciplinary scholarship bridging humanities and civic practice
McBride co-directs a citywide middle school debate league (in partnership with Xavier University of Louisiana) recognized as a national model by the Middle School Public Debate Program. This initiative received a grant from the American Philosophical Association and awards from Mayors Nagin and Landrieu.
He also directs the Mellon Graduate Program in Community-Engaged Scholarship, fostering interdisciplinary public scholarship among humanities graduate students, faculty, and community leaders.
