Ryan Kathman is an Assistant Professor of Theatre in the Department of Theatre at Nebraska Wesleyan University, where he teaches acting, directing, stage combat, and dramatic literature. His professional background spans stage and screen, with regional and national performance and directing credits.
Education:
- MFA in Acting for Stage/Screen
- BA in Secondary Education with Language Arts emphasis (Theatre, Speech, English, Journalism)
- BA in Theatre/Communication
- Minor in Instrumental Music
His research and artistic practice centers on performance, Shakespearean adaptation, and stage combat. He has created original solo performances such as One-Ham Manlet and adapted classics like Twelfth Night into intimate formats. His work bridges academic training and professional theatre, emphasizing physical storytelling and textual analysis.
Ryan has been recognized for his expertise in stage combat through certification with the Society of American Fight Directors. His professional affiliations include the Stage Directors & Choreographers Society (SDC), Dueling Arts International (DAI), and former membership in Actors Equity Association (AEA).
He has performed alongside notable actors and under acclaimed directors such as Robert Altman and Alexander Payne, and has directed original works at fringe festivals and regional theatres. His teaching includes courses like Acting I–IV, Directing I–IV, Script Analysis, and specialized seminars on Shakespeare and global storytelling.
Ryan is a native of Omaha and a proud alumnus of Nebraska Wesleyan, returning to Lincoln after years of professional work across the Midwest and South. He is married to Jenny, and they are parents to Gracie and George.
