Ryan J. White is a Professor and Ohio Eminent Scholar in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Cincinnati, with a joint appointment in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. He has served as Head of Chemistry since 2022. He holds a B.A. in Chemistry from the University of North Carolina (2003) and a Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of Utah (2007). His postdoctoral training at UC Santa Barbara was followed by academic roles at the University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC) before joining UC in 2017.
His research focuses on nanoscience, electrochemistry, and biological interfaces, with an emphasis on developing innovative analytical methods for high-resolution chemical and biological detection. This includes aptamer-based sensors, nanopore sensing, and sensor technologies for clinical and environmental applications.
White has secured over $10 million in grants from NIH, NSF, and industry partners, including projects on continuous drug monitoring, gliotransmitter detection, and sensor stability. He has mentored numerous students and postdoctoral researchers, contributing to interdisciplinary collaborations. His awards include the Royce W. Murray Young Investigator Award from the Society for Electroanalytical Chemistry.
He serves on editorial boards for journals like Analytical Chemistry and Analytica Chimica Acta, and actively participates in academic service roles, including leadership in the Center for Chemical Sensors and Biosensors and the Institute for Research in Sensing (IRiS).
