Professor Damien Arrigan is a distinguished academic in Analytical Chemistry at Curtin University's School of Molecular and Life Sciences within the Faculty of Science and Engineering. His research has significantly advanced the field of electroanalytical chemistry, particularly in the development of novel sensing methodologies at liquid-liquid interfaces. With an extensive publication record spanning over three decades, Professor Arrigan has established himself as a leading expert in nanoscale electrochemistry and sensor development.
Professor Arrigan earned his BSc(Hons) in Analytical Science from Dublin City University in 1986, followed by a PhD in Chemistry from the National University of Ireland, Cork in 1992. His academic journey includes postdoctoral positions at the National Microelectronics Research Centre (Cork) and the University of Southampton, a lectureship at the University of Salford, and research roles at Tyndall National Institute before joining Curtin University in 2009.
Professor Arrigan's research focuses on the intersection of analytical chemistry and electrochemistry, with particular emphasis on developing innovative sensing and detection methods. His work explores electrochemistry at liquid-liquid interfaces, nanopores, and nanoscale electrochemical systems for detecting biological macromolecules, disease biomarkers, and environmental contaminants. Recent research has centered on PFAS detection, protein-electrode interactions, and advancing water reuse technologies through novel sensor development. His laboratory combines fundamental electrochemical studies with practical applications in environmental monitoring and biomedical analysis.
Analysis of Professor Arrigan's recent publications reveals a strong focus on environmental contaminants (particularly PFAS), protein-electrode interactions, and nanoscale electrochemical systems. His research group has made significant contributions to understanding ion-transfer processes at micro- and nano-interfaces, developing novel detection strategies for challenging analytes, and advancing fundamental knowledge of electrochemical processes at soft interfaces. The interdisciplinary nature of his work bridges chemistry, materials science, and environmental engineering.
- Fellow of the Institute of Chemistry of Ireland (FICI)
- Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry (FRSC)
- Fellow of the Royal Australian Chemical Institute (FRACI)
- Chartered Chemist (CChem)
Professor Arrigan serves as Associate Editor for Analyst (Royal Society of Chemistry) and Series Editor for the Detection Science Series. He also sits on the editorial boards of Bioelectrochemistry (Elsevier), Electroanalysis (Wiley), and the Journal of Electroanalytical Chemistry (Elsevier). His teaching portfolio spans undergraduate and Honours levels, covering analytical chemistry, electrochemistry, chemical sensing, and biochemical detection methods. His research group maintains active collaborations with institutions worldwide, focusing on advancing electrochemical sensing technologies for environmental and biomedical applications.
