Ryan Hopkins is a Research Student at the University of Brighton, affiliated with the School of Applied Sciences. He is pursuing a Doctor of Philosophy through the Centre for Lifelong Health and Doctoral College. His research focuses on understanding age-related mechanisms of faecal incontinence (FI), particularly how signaling molecules like serotonin and nitric oxide contribute to impaired anorectal reflexes in older adults. He is also developing electrochemical biosensors to detect biomarkers for clinical diagnostics.
Education: Master of Pharmacy (University of Brighton, 2016–2020).
Research Interests:
- Age-related gastrointestinal dysfunction
- Biomarker detection in faeces
- Electrochemical biosensor technology
His work addresses the lack of diagnostic tools and treatments for FI, aiming to improve quality of life for affected populations. Collaborations involve interdisciplinary teams in biomedical engineering and clinical sciences.
