Ryan Holmberg is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Art History, Theory, and Criticism at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. He specializes in the study of Japanese comics (manga) and their historical, cultural, and artistic contexts.
- Education: BA (1998) from Boston University, PhD (2007) in Art History from Yale University.
Research Interests: Holmberg's work focuses on the evolution of manga from its premodern predecessors to contemporary forms, examining narrative picture scrolls, humor and political cartooning in 19th-20th century Japan, and the intersection of manga with global comics, film, animation, and painting. His research also explores the translation and critical interpretation of Japanese comics.
Notable Contributions: He is the author of Garo Manga: The First Decade, 1964-1973 (2010) and The Translator Without Talent (2020), and has translated works by Tsuge Yoshiharu, Tsurita Kuniko, and Katsumata Susumu.
