Orna Shaughnessy is an Associate Professor of Japanese and Director of Asian Studies at the University of Denver's College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences. She holds a PhD in Japanese literature from the University of California, Berkeley, and has received prestigious awards including the Fulbright IIE Fellowship and the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation Award. Her research focuses on Japanese literature, popular culture, digital humanities, and critical race theory, with specialties in Meiji-era travel narratives and manga studies. She teaches courses on Japanese literature and cultural production, earning the William T. Driscoll Master Educator award in 2018.
Dr. Shaughnessy's research spans 19th-century Japanese travel literature, manga's role in historical representation, and translation studies. She actively engages in digital humanities projects and has published works on Meiji political cartoons and national identity in manga. Her work bridges cultural studies, language pedagogy, and interdisciplinary approaches to Japanese studies.
