Ryan Hilliard is an Assistant Professor in the Department of History at Clemson University. They hold a Ph.D. in History from the University of California, Los Angeles (2020). Their research focuses on women, gender, and sexuality in early modern France, particularly singlewomen in pre-Revolutionary Paris (1660-1789). Their upcoming manuscript, tentatively titled "By Choice or By Circumstance: Singlewomen in Early Modern France," examines social networks, survival strategies, and cultural/economic/political roles of unmarried women.

Teaching specialties include medieval/early modern European history and gender studies. Courses taught include HIST 1720 (The West and the World I), HIST 4700 (Women, Gender, and Sexuality in Early Modern Europe), and HIST 4390 (History of Sex Work). Received the 2019 UCLA Laura Kinsey Teaching Award.
