Ryan Fogt is a Professor in the Department of Geography within the College of Arts and Sciences at Ohio University. He serves as the Director of the Scalia Laboratory for Atmospheric Analysis, where he conducts research and supports teaching, forecasting, and climate analysis. His office is located in Clippinger Hall on the Athens Campus.
- Ph.D., The Ohio State University, 2007
Dr. Fogt's research centers on polar meteorology and climatology, with a focus on climate variability and change in Antarctica. He investigates large-scale atmospheric dynamics, particularly the Southern Annular Mode (SAM), El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) teleconnections, and the Amundsen-Bellingshausen Seas Low (ABSL). His work combines climate models, observational data, and station-based reconstructions to disentangle natural variability from anthropogenic influences on Antarctic climate trends.
The recent publications highlight a consistent focus on Southern Hemisphere climate dynamics, particularly the interactions between major climate modes like ENSO and SAM, the behavior of semi-permanent pressure systems such as the ABSL, and long-term climate trends in Antarctica. His research contributes to understanding how global climate change manifests in polar regions through changes in atmospheric circulation.
Dr. Fogt actively mentors graduate and undergraduate students in meteorology and climatology, guiding research on topics including Antarctic pressure reconstructions, hurricane climatology, urban heat waves, and GIS-based storm surge modeling.
He teaches a range of meteorology courses including Introduction to Meteorology, Climatology, Physical Meteorology, and Dynamic Meteorology I & II. As Director of the Scalia Lab, he supports hands-on learning and research in atmospheric analysis.
