Ryan Crews is an Associate Professor in the Department of Podiatric Medicine and Surgery at the Dr. William M. Scholl College of Podiatric Medicine, Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science. He also serves as a clinical research scientist within the Center for Lower Extremity Ambulatory Research (CLEAR). Dr. Crews joined Scholl College in 2004 and has established himself as a leading researcher in diabetic foot care, biomechanics, and lower extremity complications.
Dr. Crews received his BS in exercise science from Truman State University, where he earned an internship at NASA's Exercise Physiology Research Laboratory. He then pursued an MS in kinesiology from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, focusing on motor control and biomechanics. While working at Scholl College, he obtained his PhD in Life Sciences from Manchester Metropolitan University.
His research focuses on the role of biomechanics and physical activity in the formation and treatment of injury and disease, with particular emphasis on diabetic complications of the lower extremities and risk identification/prevention of falls. Dr. Crews has published over 50 peer-reviewed articles in prestigious journals including Diabetes Care, Clinical Biomechanics, and Gait and Posture. His work has significantly contributed to advancements in diabetic foot care, offloading techniques, and fall risk assessment.
Dr. Crews' publications demonstrate a consistent research trajectory focused on improving outcomes for patients with diabetic foot complications. His recent work has expanded into technology-based interventions for monitoring physical activity, novel approaches to offloading, and interdisciplinary collaboration through initiatives like the American Limb Preservation Society. His research bridges biomechanics, clinical practice, and patient-centered care.
Among his notable scientific contributions are systematic reviews on offloading interventions, guidelines for diabetic foot ulcer management, and innovative approaches to measuring plantar tissue stress. His work has helped shape clinical practice in diabetic foot care internationally.
As an educator, Dr. Crews coordinates PAPB 501 Understanding and Implementing Clinical Research and teaches courses in biomechanics, sports medicine, and podiatric orthopedics. His teaching emphasizes the objective measurement and evaluation of human movement and performance, as well as the conduct of clinical research. He has mentored numerous students who have co-authored his publications.
Dr. Crews is actively involved with the Center for Lower Extremity Ambulatory Research (CLEAR), where his team investigates innovative approaches to diabetic foot care and lower extremity complications. His current research explores the integration of technology for monitoring physical activity in patients at risk for diabetic foot ulcers.
