Ryan Cloutier is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Physics & Astronomy at McMaster University. His research focuses on detecting and characterizing exoplanets orbiting M dwarf stars, particularly super-Earths and sub-Neptunes, to understand planetary formation and potential habitability. He utilizes observational techniques including precision radial velocity measurements, transit spectroscopy, and data from space telescopes like JWST and TESS.
His research investigates planetary compositions, orbital dynamics, and atmospheric properties of exoplanets. Key interests include the radius valley phenomenon, tidal heating effects, and developing observation strategies for terrestrial exoplanet characterization. Recent work explores water detection in exoplanet atmospheres and validation of multi-planet systems.
Cloutier's publications demonstrate consistent focus on JWST applications for exoplanet science, statistical validation methods, and comparative analysis of planetary systems. Awarded the Polanyi Prize in Physics (2023) for contributions to the field.
He advises graduate students working on exoplanet demographics, stellar spectroscopy, and planetary formation models. Research involves collaborations with international consortia including the NIRPS and SPIRou spectrograph teams.
Leads laboratory facilities at McMaster focused on exoplanet research and participates in mission planning for future space telescopes. Current work emphasizes bridging observational data with planetary formation theories.
