Ryan Burns serves as Senior Lecturer in the School of Art and Media at the University of Brighton, holding a PhD from the University of Sussex and recognized as a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy for his teaching excellence.

Dr Burns' research critically examines the intersection of media technologies with identity formation and expert practices through ethnographic studies in scientific laboratories. His work spans media studies, critical theory, cultural studies, and science and technology studies, with particular focus on how scientists adopt tablets, VR, and 5G systems while navigating cultural discourses that frame technologies as simultaneously exciting and dangerous. He investigates the politics of exclusion in digital expert communities and the cultural construction of emerging technologies.
His publication trajectory from 2015-2019 reveals consistent engagement with critical theory (notably Baudrillard and Barthes) applied to contemporary technology debates.
