Ryan Bezy is a Professor of Biology at Mount Mercy University, affiliated with the Natural and Applied Sciences School and the Biology Department. He has been teaching since 2009, focusing on molecular biology and genetics, and actively mentors students in research projects. His research spans two areas: bacterial cell division in collaboration with Dr. David Weiss at the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine, and pedagogical strategies to enhance student engagement in biology education. Bezy holds a PhD from Indiana University and a BA from DePauw University.
Education:
- PhD in Molecular Biology and Genetics, Indiana University
- BA in Biology, DePauw University
Research Interests: Bezy investigates bacterial cell division mechanisms in Escherichia coli and evaluates teaching methods like problem-based learning in higher education. His work on cyanobacteria includes studying light-dependent pigment regulation in Fremyella diplosiphon. Current collaborations include projects at the University of Iowa, offering students internship opportunities.
Awards & Grants:
- R.J. McElroy Trust Grant (2014)
- FUTURE in Biomedicine Program Fellow (2013–2014)
Advising & Grants: Mentors include undergraduate researchers like Cline, Fecht, and Lacy. Grant-funded projects have supported both microbiology and pedagogy initiatives. Collaborates with Dr. Alesia Hruska-Hageman on educational outcomes in biology courses.
Labs & Affiliations: Member of the Iowa Academy of Sciences and the American Society for Microbiology. Laboratory work focuses on microbial genetics and educational outreach programs at Mount Mercy University.
