Prof. Ruud den Hartigh is a Professor of Talent Development with a focus on sport and performance contexts at the University of Groningen. He holds positions in the Faculty of Behavioural and Social Sciences, Department of Developmental Psychology, and directs the Heymans Institute for Psychological Research. His expertise spans sport psychology, complex systems, and resilience, with a strong emphasis on human performance dynamics.
Education: Completed studies in Psychology (University of Groningen) and Human Movement Science (VU University Amsterdam), with a European Master in Sport and Exercise Psychology. PhD (2015) from University of Groningen and Montpellier.
Research Interests: Talent development, psychological momentum, resilience in athletes, and applications of complex systems theory. Current projects include Resilient Athletes (ZonMw-funded) and KCT Platform (Dutch Ministry of Defence collaboration).
Publications highlight interdisciplinary approaches to athlete assessment, injury prediction, and personalized resilience strategies. Awards include Young Researcher Award (2015) and Snijders-Kouwer Award (2016).
Teaching: Coordinates the MSc Talent Development & Creativity program and teaches Sport and Performance Psychology. Supervises PhD students in talent assessment, resilience, and performance dynamics.
Labs/Teams: Centre of Expertise for Talent Development; collaborates with soccer clubs (PSV, Vitesse), Dutch Special Forces, and data scientists. Active in international research networks on sports psychology and complex systems.
