Prof. Nico van Yperen is Professor of Sport & Performance Psychology at the University of Groningen's Faculty of Behavioural and Social Sciences, making him the first professor of sports psychology in the Netherlands. He is also involved in the MSc degree programme in Talent Development and Creativity and serves on the general board of the Sport Science Institute Groningen. His work bridges academic research with practical applications in sports settings.
Van Yperen's research focuses on the mental aspects of sport and performance, talent development, and achievement motivation. His expertise spans psychological resilience in sports, performance motivation, stress management, and coaching effectiveness. He maintains an active blog on these topics and regularly provides advice to athletes, coaches, sporting organizations, and consultancy firms on motivation, performance, talent development, stress and wellbeing, and mentoring.
His recent publication portfolio reveals a strong emphasis on applying complex dynamic systems theory to sports performance, with a particular focus on individualized approaches to understanding athlete development. His work increasingly employs network analysis to map performance determinants and examines psychological momentum in sports contexts. A significant portion of his research investigates talent development pathways in soccer, including the psychological factors influencing athletic success and dropout rates.
Van Yperen's practical experience as an active competitive athlete across multiple sports (including judo, football, water polo, volleyball, tennis, and golf) informs his research perspective, giving him unique insight into the psychological challenges faced by athletes at various levels of competition.
