Ruth Wodak is a Distinguished Professor and Chair in Discourse Studies at Lancaster University. She holds dual affiliations with the University of Vienna and has held visiting professorships at institutions including Stanford University and Malmö University. Her research focuses on Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), sociolinguistics, and political discourse, particularly examining issues of racism, nationalism, and identity construction. Wodak co-developed the Discourse-Historical Approach (DHA) in CDA, emphasizing interdisciplinary analysis of discursive practices over time.
She served as Director of the Research Centre “Discourse, Politics, Identity” at the University of Vienna (1997–2006) and co-directs the Austrian National Focal Point for the EU Agency for Fundamental Rights. Wodak’s work includes analyzing parliamentary debates on immigration, EU enlargement, and collective memories of WWII. Her recent publications address far-right populism, migration discourses, and the normalization of xenophobic rhetoric.
Wodak has received numerous accolades, including the Ludwig Wittgenstein Prize (1996), Bruno Kreisky Prize (2021), and honorary doctorates from Örebro and Warwick Universities. She contributes to editorial boards of journals like Discourse & Society and has authored/co-authored over 30 books, including The Politics of Fear (2020) and Identity Politics Past and Present (2022). Her research bridges academia and public engagement, addressing urgent societal issues through rigorous discourse analysis.
